I get the error "This pre-release version of DirectX has expired, please
upgrade to the latest version from http://www.microsoft.com/directx"

I'm trying to run some software that requires direct X, and that message
keeps popping up. I do what the error message says, but it just links me back
to the directX file I just downloaded... a loop.

Whats up with that?

Are you running the installer from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3

Any idea what versions of DX it thinks you have installed? What does the dx
control panel say is installed?

I think the only 'pre release' versions out there in the recent past are the
DX10 betas and Managed DirectX 2.0. THe other alternative of course is that
the app you are using is checking for DirectX in an upsupported way and
getting confused with what it finds. What app are you trying to run?
